Patanjali Yoga Sutras by Swami Vidyapradananda

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is a foundational text of classical yoga, consisting of 196 aphorisms (sutras) compiled by the sage Patanjali around 400 CE. It provides a systematic framework for understanding the mind and achieving spiritual liberation.

Patanjali defines yoga as the “cessation of the fluctuations of the mind-stuff” (Yogas chitta vritti nirodha). The goal is to still the mental activity so that the “seer” (true self) can abide in its own nature.


Swami Vidyapradananda is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sports Science and Yoga at Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI), Belur Math. He holds a PhD from Pennsylvania State University, USA (2013). His work bridges ancient Indian wisdom with modern science, focusing on Rajayoga, Hathayoga, and Yoga Upanishads.
